Ethereum was founded by Vitalik Buterin and 7 other co-founders: Gavin Wood, Mihai Alisie, Charles Hoskinson, Joseph Lubin, Amir Chetrit, Jeffrey Wilcke, and Anthony Di Iorio.
Before transitioning to Proof of Stake, Ethereum operated under a Proof of Work (PoW) consensus where miners were rewarded for validating blocks. Initially, the block reward was set at 5 ETH, then reduced to 3 ETH after the Byzantium upgrade (2017), and later to 2 ETH with the Constantinople upgrade (2019). In addition to block rewards, miners also earned transaction fees and occasional ommer (uncle) rewards. This system remained in place until Ethereum's shift to Proof of Stake with The Merge in 2022.
Prior to The Merge, approximately 13,000 ETH were issued daily, compared to around 1,600 ETH after the transition, representing a reduction of roughly 90%.
Ethereum 2.0 referred to the upgrade transitioning Ethereum from Proof of Work to Proof of Stake, completed with The Merge in 2022. The term is no longer used, it is simply called Ethereum.
Ethereum units are divisible up to 18 decimal places, with 1 ETH equaling 1 quintillion wei, making wei the smallest denomination of Ether. This fine-grained divisibility enables users to handle tiny amounts of Ether when interacting with the network.
| Unit | Alternative name | Wei value | Gwei value | Ether value |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wei | Wei | 1 Wei | 10^-9 Gwei | 10^-18 ETH |
| Kwei | Babbage | 10^3 Wei | 10^-6 Gwei | 10^-15 ETH |
| Mwei | Lovelace | 10^6 Wei | 10^-3 Gwei | 10^-12 ETH |
| Gwei | Shannon | 10^9 Wei | 1 Gwei | 10^-9 ETH |
| Twei | Szabo | 10^12 Wei | 10^3 Gwei | 10^-6 ETH |
| Pwei | Finney | 10^15 Wei | 10^6 Gwei | 10^-3 ETH |
| Ether | 10^18 Wei | 10^9 Gwei | 1 ETH |
