The MORPHO token TGE took place on June 24, 2022, but the token was intentionally launched as non-transferable. This design allowed the DAO to decide when transferability should begin, while giving the protocol time to distribute ownership across users, contributors, and strategic partners. The vote to enable transferability (MIP-76) was held from November 3 to 6, 2024. After the proposal was approved, transferability was officially activated on November 21, 2024. To enable this, a new Wrapped MORPHO contract was introduced (following governance proposal MIP-75). The original token contract, known as Legacy MORPHO, lacked functionality and was designed to be non-transferable. As a result, holders of Legacy MORPHO had to wrap their tokens into the new transferable version at a 1:1 ratio for their tokens to become tradable on the market.
The Morpho Association is a French nonprofit that brings together the main contributors and users of the Morpho protocol. Its role is to support the protocol’s development ecosystem, not by building the software itself, but by enabling and funding those who do. The association provides key resources that help users and developers access and understand the protocol. It hosts the main user interface at morpho.org, maintains technical documentation for developers, holds and manages the intellectual property for open-source components such as Morpho Optimizers, published under GPL-3 on GitHub. The Morpho Association does not research or develop Morpho software directly; this work is carried out by independent contributors and the Institut Louis Bachelier (ILB).
